Description

This dial-type calculator, often called a volvelle, was an essential tool for photographers before the widespread integration of light meters into camera bodies. It provided manual exposure calculations based on the distance of "Mazda" Photoflood or Photoflash lamps from the subject. By rotating the inner black disc to align the film type with the lamp distance, the user could read the appropriate shutter speed and lens opening ($f$-number) at the bottom. The guide explicitly includes settings for "Brownies, Jiffy Kodaks, and similar cameras," which typically had very limited aperture and shutter controls.
