Description

The Mamiya 135 EE is a compact, stylish Japanese rangefinder from the mid-70s. While Mamiya is world-famous for their professional medium-format cameras, they also produced high-quality consumer 35mm cameras like this one. The "EE" in the name stands for Electronic Exposure, as the camera features a shutter-priority automatic system. Technically, this is a coupled rangefinder, similar in operation to your Konica Auto S2 but in a much more pocketable "compact" form factor. The 40mm focal length of the Mamiya-Kominar lens is often called the "goldilocks" length—slightly wider than a normal 50mm but more natural than a 35mm, making it perfect for candid street photography. One of its most distinctive features is the selenium-style "honeycomb" meter surrounding the lens. This design is highly efficient because it automatically accounts for any filters you screw onto the front of the lens. On the top plate, you'll see a simple "check" mark near the frame counter and a red/yellow exposure warning system. When set to "AUTO," the camera's CdS meter (powered by a small battery) selects the aperture based on the shutter speed you’ve chosen. This unit is in good cosmetic condition, though the "Kominar" lens branding shows a bit of the classic brassing that gives vintage gear its character. It’s a rugged, metal-bodied alternative to the "plastic fantastic" cameras that would dominate the market just a few years later.
