WorkhorseDescription
The Etude is a Soviet-era medium format camera manufactured in Belarus. It is constructed almost entirely of plastic, featuring a very simple f/11 meniscus lens and a single shutter speed of approximately 1/60th of a second (plus a Bulb setting for long exposures). Designed as an entry-level camera for students and beginners, it produces sixteen 4.5 x 6 cm images on a standard roll of 120 film. Despite its basic technical specifications, it has gained a following in modern "toy camera" photography circles for the soft, lo-fi aesthetic of its images. Gemini said
The small red window on the back of the camera is a manual exposure counter. Because 120 roll film is backed with a long strip of light-proof paper, the camera does not need a complex internal mechanical counter. Instead, as you wind the film, you look through this window to see the frame numbers printed directly on the back of the paper. The red tint is functional: it filters out the actinic light most sensitive to the film (which was historically orthochromatic), allowing you to check your progress without "fogging" or ruining the film inside.Category
