Description

The SMC Pentax-M 50mm f/2 is a classic "pancake-style" standard prime lens from the M-series, designed to be as compact and lightweight as possible for the ultra-portable Pentax ME and MX camera bodies. While it is often considered the "budget" alternative to the f/1.4 or f/1.7 versions, many enthusiasts actually prefer the f/2 for its exceptional sharpness, high contrast, and the fact that it is arguably the most compact 50mm lens Pentax ever produced. The "SMC" in the name stands for Super Multi-Coated, a world-class lens coating technology pioneered by Pentax to drastically reduce lens flare and ghosting while maintaining rich color saturation. This lens uses the universal Pentax K-mount, which is one of the most successful mounts in history; it means you can use this lens on almost any Pentax SLR made after 1975, as well as modern Pentax DSLRs (where it becomes a fantastic 75mm-equivalent portrait lens). In the photos, you can see the distinctive purple and amber hues of the multi-coating reflected in the front element. The lens features a 6-blade aperture diaphragm and a tactile, rubberized focus ring. It is accompanied by its original hard-shell "Pentax" embossed leatherette case, which has a dedicated strap for easy carry. This lens is a favorite for street photographers who want a discrete, high-performance setup that can easily slip into a jacket pocket when mounted on a small body.
