StandardDescription
The Soligor Selector CdS is a classic handheld light meter from the era when many cameras lacked internal metering or required a more precise "incident" light reading for professional results. Unlike older selenium meters that didn't require batteries but struggled in the dark, this unit uses a CdS (Cadmium Sulfide) cell, which is far more sensitive to low light.
Technically, the meter features a "dual-range" sensitivity system, indicated by the prominent red and green buttons on the side. The green button is typically for high-light (outdoor) situations, while the red button engages a more sensitive circuit for low-light (indoor) environments. Once a reading is taken, the user rotates the large outer dial to align the needle with a reference mark; this then reveals a full scale of shutter speed and aperture combinations that will yield a correct exposure.
The meter also includes an EV (Exposure Value) scale, which was a shorthand system used by many mid-century cameras (like your Konica Auto S2) to link shutter and aperture settings. Like most CdS meters of this age, it was designed to run on a 1.35V mercury battery (housed under the silver screw cap on the back). Today, photographers use zinc-air batteries or recalibrate the dial to account for the higher voltage of modern 1.5V alkaline cells.Made/Created
