Description

The Sunpak Auto 144 D is a versatile, compact flash unit that was part of Sunpak's "dedicated" line. The "D" in the name indicates its ability to use interchangeable mounting modules to "talk" to specific camera systems (like Canon, Nikon, or Minolta) for features like ready-light signaling in the viewfinder. Like the Vivitar 285 in your collection, this unit uses Thyristor technology, which saves battery power and speeds up recycling times by only using the energy needed for a specific distance. It features a tilting bounce head (indicated by the 0–90° markings on the side) to help you avoid the "deer-in-the-headlights" look by reflecting light off the ceiling. On the back, you'll find a sliding scale for ISO and distance, along with a "test" button and an "Auto OK" light. This light is particularly helpful: it flashes after you take a picture to confirm that the flash had enough power to properly expose the subject. It runs on two standard AA batteries, making it very easy to power up today.
