Description

The Sunpak Auto 321 is a classic, robust "thyristor" flash unit that was a popular third-party alternative to name-brand flashes during the height of the manual-focus SLR era. Similar to the Vivitar 285 and Sunpak Auto 144 D in your collection, this unit was designed to be powerful yet efficient, with circuitry that cuts the flash duration once the subject is correctly exposed in its "Auto" modes. Technically, the Auto 321 is distinguished by its sliding vertical calculator on the side. By setting your film's ASA (ISO), the green bars indicate the effective range for automatic exposure. It also features a tilting head for bounce photography, helping to eliminate harsh shadows. A unique feature of this specific model is the dual power source: it can run on standard AA batteries (the "BATT" setting) or be plugged directly into a wall outlet using an AC adapter (the "AC" setting), which was a favorite feature for early studio or indoor event photographers. On the back, you will find the "ready/test" light and an "auto signal" light. If the "auto signal" light glows after a shot, it confirms that the flash's sensor detected enough light for a successful exposure. Like other flashes from this period, it connects via a standard hot shoe or a PC sync cord.
