Description

This iconic "Blue Dot" pack of Sylvania flashbulbs represents the peak of single-use flash technology before electronic strobes became affordable. These are Blue Bulbs, specifically designed for use with Daylight Color Film; the blue coating acted as a color-correcting filter so that indoor flash photos didn't turn out overly yellow/orange. Each bulb contains a fine nest of zirconium or aluminum foil in an oxygen-rich environment. When triggered, the foil ignites in a brilliant, one-time burst of light. The "Blue Dot" was actually a safety feature: if the dot on the tip of the bulb turned pink, it meant air had leaked into the bulb and it was likely to shatter upon firing. The graphics on this box are classic mid-century marketing, featuring a smiling woman with a rangefinder camera. The "169" handwritten on the box is likely the original price ($1.69) from a drugstore or camera shop.
