Description

Widely considered the most influential photography book of the 20th century, The Americans resulted from Robert Frank’s 1955–1956 cross-country journey funded by a Guggenheim Fellowship. Frank captured 28,000 images, narrowing them down to 83 frames that challenged the idealized image of post-war America by highlighting themes of loneliness, racial tension, and social isolation. This 2008 Steidl edition is particularly significant because Frank was personally involved in every stage of its production. He worked with Gerhard Steidl to re-scan his original vintage prints using tritone printing, which revealed that many previous editions had been heavily cropped. For this release, Frank revised the crops—often including more of the frame than seen in the 1958/59 originals—and even replaced two images with slightly different frames from the same sequences. The book retains the iconic introduction by Jack Kerouac, which Frank once described as a "perfect match" for the visual rhythm of his work.
