IconicDescription
The Model L is one of the most recognizable versions of the View-Master, distinguished by its vibrant red plastic body and large orange advance lever. Originally developed as a way to view scenic postcards in 3D, the View-Master system became a staple of childhood entertainment and travel photography. This specific viewer is shown with a reel titled "Sunset Paints the Grand Canyon."
Mechanically, the viewer mimics natural human binocular vision by showing each eye a slightly different image through two separate lenses, creating a high-resolution 3D illusion. It is a "passive" viewer, requiring the user to point the translucent window on the front toward a bright light source to illuminate the tiny Kodachrome slides. The accompanying box indicates reels from the earlier Sawyer's era (pre-1966), making the collection older than the Model L viewer itself. While often considered a toy, the system has historical significance; it was used by the U.S. military for airplane identification training during WWII and served as a high-fidelity travelogue tool for adults for decades.Made/Created
