Hand-pieced and hand-quilted. Used centennial colors and multiple prints. The backside of the quilt contains a label with cross-stitching: "Made for Harry / By his grandma E.S.E./ 1873"Context
Elizabeth "Betsy" Settle Edmonds was married to a man named Lewis Edmonds. The two had 6 children together, including Amanda Virginia Edmonds.
According to Amanda's journals (edited and published by Nancy Chappelear Baird), Amanda, also known as "Tee", was a descendant of the Edmonds and Settle families, both of which owned several acres in the Belle Grove area. Mt. Bleak and Belle Grove were owned by Isaac Settle, Betsy's father. Upon her marriage to Lewis, they received Belle Grove as part of her dowry.
Amanda Edmonds (January 13, 1839 - July 13, 1921) was married to John A. Chappelear. The two had five children together, including Harry, for whom this quilt was made. Amanda died at age 82 of uterine cancer.Collection
