Context

This quilt was made by Nanny Massie (Patrick) Arbuckle for her daughter, Marian, when Marian left for the Virginia Female Institute (now Stuart Hall) in Staunton, Virginia. Marian graduated in 1899 at the age of 17. It is believed this quilt was made in 1893 when Marian was 11 years old. Marian's initials are found in one corner of the quilt. Most notable in this quilt is the repeated use of fabric that was commercially produced for the reign of Queen Victoria.
