Description

This medallion quilt has as its center appliquéd with flowers cut from fabric. This area measures 24 1/2" x 25 1/2". The background fabric is unbleached muslin. Quilting consists of cross hatching, diagonal lines, and vines of flowers. Some of the quilting lines are only 1/8" to 1/2" apart. The top has been taken around to the back as an edging. The backing is a coarser woven unbleached muslin.

Context

Margaret Barnhart Barley made this quilt in Winchester, Virginia circa 1847 for her daughter's hope chest. It is rumored to have won awards, but the names of those awards are unknown. Margaret was born in Sheperdstown, VA (now West Virginia) but moved to Winchester to be with her husband.
