The Breneman family was a pioneer Mennonite family in the Valley. It is uncertain who in the family made the quilt, but it was a family heirloom. The first generation of Brenemans came from Germany via Switzerland and settled in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Abraham Breneman, born 1744, married Marie Reiff and the two of them moved to Rockingham County. The couple had 16 children and 111 grandchildren. The estate contains two churches: the Breneman church built in 1826 and the Lindale Church, built 1898. Both churches contain a cemetery for the family. Abraham also made a water-powered mill on Linville Creek in the early 1800s. This mill is still up and open for visitors. The donor is a descendant of Abraham and Marie.Collection
