Description

Made of high-quality cotton, this quilt is designed with lengthwise strips of fabric. Two of the strips are pieced. A blue print is in the center, next a white plaindye, zig-zag (the zig-zag, or Streak of Lightning, pattern is found often on early Shenandoah Valley quilts) of white and pink print, white, a pink print, white, another pink print, white, and lastly the blue print again. The white has become a soft off-white from aging. Backing is composed of 2 horizontal panels of a pink print that also serves as a binding. The binding is only 1/4'' wide and uses rounded corners. There is likely no batting. Hand quilted in straight lines, waves and lines that form triangles. The stitches are even at 8 stitches per inch. At the top are two twill tapes perhaps used to tie the quilt to the crib.

Context

Over the years, the corners of the Strippy Crib Quilt have been torn away, but the fine needlework of its maker can still be appreciated. Conservation work has been done on the piece to stabilize it. The fact that it is a strippy quilt, as well as its age, makes this a rare find in children's quilts.
