1991.003.002Description
Four strips of Crazy Quilt Pattern, all done with the same general materials. Each of the strips contains 5 blocks.
Each block is profusely covered with designs in embroidery and multi-designed stitches surround each patch. Embellishments consist of rushing, ribbons, and emblem in embroidery, two-dimensional flowers, and a butterfly.Context
Family lore says that these strips were completed by the admiring lady friends of Augustine Wills Neale, however we do not know how many lady friends or what their names were.
Neale served in the Confederacy as a private in Company B, 2nd Battalion, Maryland Infantry and fought in the Battle of Cedar Creek. After the war, Neale finished his education, gaining a degree form Georgetown University in 1868. He was a wealthy and respected landowner in the county. He had eight children and lived with at least five of them until his death in 1932 at the age of 93.Collection
