Description

This cotton quilt measures at 85" x 96''. It uses a traditional combination rose pattern; it is in the Brackman encyclopedia, applique #11.832. The predominant colors are pink, red, green, and a white ground. The backing is white cotton and the it uses red binding with hand applied square corners. Initials "EMS Scruggs" at bottom edge in third block from right corner.

Context

This quilt was made circa 1850 by an unknown quilt maker in an unknown location. It has the initials EMS Scruggs quilted into the third block from the right corner. The museum acquired it at a Charlottesville auction.
