Description

1891 Crazy Quilt with various fabrics and embroideries.

Context

This quilt was made by Theresa Beery Shank of Rockingham, Virginia. Theresa was born in 1875 near Edom, Virginia. The quilt was made in 1891, 6 years before her marriage to E.R. Shank in 1897. The quilt was left to their daughter, Evelyn, before being left to her son, Dr. George D. Delo, Jr., a dentist from Gloucester, Virginia. The initials “L.M.B.” are embroidered in one block of the quilt. The museum was also gifted with this quilt a book (2014.008.001B) published in 1905: “Beery History.” It is possible the “L.M.B.” could have represented Liva M. Beery or Lucinda M. Beery, but it is unsure as to how closely related either of these women were to Theresa. There is only one known child of Theresa and Emmer, a daughter named Evelyn Shank. As the book was published in 1905, there is a possibility that “L.M.B.” could have represented one of Theresa's nieces or nephews.
