This quilt is an all-silk, hexagon quilt. It is made with a great variety of silks, including solids, brocades and embroidered fabrics. There is a Jerusalem star pattern as well as various other secondary patterns within the star. The back is a red, white, and blue stripe silk. The quilt is tied with hand quilting in the border. The edge is an unusual notched pattern of "tabs" with silk ribbon attached to each one with hand embroidered stitches.Context
Anne Sanford Macdonald Green made this quilt in the late 1800's in Culpepper, Virginia. The quilt was lost to the family for a long time, but many knew of its existence somewhere. It was believed to have been passed to the maker's sister, Nancy, of Denver, Colorado, where it was then passed to the donor's grandmother. In 2004, it was found in the donor's parent's attic and the donor took charge of it since she was a quilter. It was exhibited at the Virginia Quilt Museum in 2013. It is also believed to have been exhibited at the Colombian Exhibition in Chicago in 1938. Since being donated to the Virginia Quilt Museum, it served as an opportunity for a family reunion, as cousins of the donor came to visit the celebrated quilt.Collection
