This doll quilt is contains 49 blocks measuring 3.5''-4'' square. Each block is a white background fabric with a character or object embroidered in red. The subjects embroidered include flowers, leaves, household objects, people, and animals, including dogs, cats, elephants, frogs, fish, and birds. The seams between each block are covered with a decorative red embroidery stitch.
It is machine pieced, hand embroidered, and machine quilted. The quilting consists of straight lines along the seams and at the top and bottom. The backing is white cotton and the binding is a solid red fabric, 0.5'' wide on the sides and 1.75'' at the top and bottom.Context
Little is known about this doll quilt and the doll and crib that were donated with it (1996.003.001B+C). The three were purchased at a yard sale by the donor. Redwork was very popular during the early 1900s, in that it commonly was used to teach little girls how to sew.Collection
