Honeybee VariationEntry/Object ID
1999.004.004Description
This appliquéd and pieced quilt uses the Honeybee variation. It is 86 1/2" x 86 1/2" and uses cotton fabrics. 49 9" blocks are made of the Honeybee pattern with the exception of the center of the block, which is of one piece of fabric; whereas the Honeybee has a nine-patch as its center. The blocks are set with like-sized unbleached muslin.
The border consists of three strips, each measuring 4" wide and is on all four sides. The backing was brought to the front as the edging. A label attached to the backing is from the Virginia Quilt Project, dated 1991.
The fabrics consist of red and green prints, plus a plain-dyed blue.
The quilting consists of a cable on the middle border, half concentric circles on outer border, and straight lines forming triangles on the inside border. A wreath was used on the like-size plain blocks. Cross hatching lines on the center of the pieced block and outline of the petals.Context
This quilt was made circa 1865 by an unknown quiltmaker. Honeybee is an old traditional pattern. It reflects the interest of the quiltmaker in her garden and surrounding environment.Collection
