First Night Resolutions Log CabinEntry/Object ID
1996.005.001Description
First Night is centered around the Rockingham Courthouse Square. Appropriately enough, the Log Cabin quilt pattern variation, Courthouse Steps, was chosen for this quilt. The light strips in this pattern provided space in which revelers could sign their names and write in their resolutions for the New Year. Each block includes lighter colored fabric where local residents included their name and New Year's Resolution. The border of the quilt top is a patterned fabric depicting people.Context
In 1996, people at the Harrisonburg First Night Celebration were invited to inscribe their name and New Years resolutions on the lighter strips of this quilt. The theme for the year was diversity in the community. The quilt was then assembled and tied during the following year. It was displayed on New Year's eve 1997, with many of the signers returning recalling if they had kept their resolutions.
This quilt was entered into the 1997 International First Night Competition. It placed in the top five for best ideas for the celebration.
