Description

This appliquéd quilt uses the tea rose variation. It uses cotton fabrics and is 81" x 68". Six appliquéd blocks measure 26 1/2" x 27", but the two top blocks measure 26 1/2" x 28". The four stems radiating diagonally out from the center and the large green leaves in the middle are similar to those on the "Tea Rose", but the center layered flower resembles that of the "Democrat Rose" pattern. The four smaller flowers are also layered like the center, which differs from either pattern. The appliqué work is done in solid fabrics in greens, red, yellow, pink, and orange. The border appears only on the two long sides. The appliqué consists of scalloped swags and on the outer edge of the swags are whimsical "lollipop" motifs. The backing was brought to the front as the edging. The quilting consists of clam shells as filler of the background of the blocks and echo quilting with feathered wreaths on the borders. Each tea rose was outlined in quilting.

Context

Made circa 1920 in Rockingham County, Virginia. It is believed to have been made as a gift from a suitor to the donor's mother, Leona Brahum. While it was not uncommon to give quilts as a romantic gift, it was unorthodox for it to have been made by a man for a woman - especially in the early 20th century. The donor's mother does not remember exactly the name of the beau who gifted her the quilt, but was sure it was a man from the Flory family.
