Description

Hand pieced, set, appliquéd, and embroidered silk quilt. Foundation pieced on muslin, so there is no batting. A total of 784 Orange Peel blocks are arranged into a 28 x 28 grid pattern. A single, appliqued border that measures 15'' wide is composed of black velvet with an appliqued and embroidered wreath design. The binding is a 1/4'' wide cream/pink color, applied by hand with straight edges and mitered corners (except for 1 corner is squared). Made out of old/recycled fabric. The embroidery is done by hand using green, wool thread in a chain stitch to create the applique wreaths in the border.

Context

This quilt was made by Margaret Ann Whitehead Etheridge, born circa 1805. There have been five caretakers of the quilt, including Margaret’s son, William Henry Etheridge, and the quilt’s donor, Shirley Renee North McCullock.
