Yo-Yo quilt of many different prints.Context
This quilt was found at the door the museum on August 21, 2016. Attached to it was a note that said, "The quilt accompanying this explanation was created in 1931. The clothes making up this quilt belonged to Wanda Margaret Wilson, grand-daughter of John and Margaret Wise Dovel, who, in 1926, built FERN ROCK at 664/660 South Mason Street in Harrisonburg, VA. Her parents, James and Marie Wilson, resided at Williamstown, KY where Mr. Wilson worked for the USDA. Wanda Wilson passed away June 11, 1931 at the age of six years, seven months. The child was accompanied to Harrisonburg by her parents and younger sister, Betty Ann Wilson (Lambert). She lay in repose at FERN ROCK and was interred in the Community Mausoleum at Woodbine cemetery. She lies there today with Mr. and Mrs. Dovel and Mr. and Mrs. Wilson."
Also attached to the quilt was a copy of Wanda Wilson's obituary from a Kentucky newspaper.
It is most likely that Wanda's mother, Marie Dovel Wilson, made the quilt after Wanda's death.
After further research, the Virginia Quilt Museum discovered that Mr. Wilson died in 1938, Mrs. Wilson died in 1952, and Betty Ann died in 2014, meaning none of them could have deposited the quilt on the steps. Betty Ann's only surviving child, Barry Wilson Lambert, could have left the story and the quilt. He passed away in October of 2016.Collection
