White quilt with four appliqué eagles and many appliqué flowers. New binding and areas of previous repairs present.

Context

Hannah Kelley Guthrie made this quilt in the 1870's in Preston County, West Virginia. It was then passed on to her son Frank Guthrie, who passed it on to Helen Guthrie. After Helen, it was passed to Terry Guthrie Slaubaugh who donated it to the Virginia Quilt Museum in 2016. In each of the family units that interred it, it was mended or added to by the women of the family. The theme of four eagles spread-winged is commonly referred to as "Union Quilts" and were popular around the time of the Civil War.
