Description

49 twelve-inch blocks with applique flower centers. This quilt was all done by hand. The quilt includes multiple techniques of applique and piecing with some embroidery. Each of the blocks is comprised of an original design floral motif appliqued and outlined with a pieced borderprint. The sashing in wine color is pieced. The blocks have been arranged into a grid pattern. The border, also pieced, is 6 inches wide and consists of half of the block design which is based on the Taj Mahal tile design. The binding is applied black fabric with mitered corners and only 1/4 inch wide. The backing is composed of 2 vertical panels of a gray/beige cotton printed fabric. There is a label in the center with participants and the name of the guild. The batting is a thin cotton. Hand quilted motifs include a grid or crosshatch in the blocks, straight lines and concentric outline in the sashing and border blocks. Stitches are uneven, but measure about 9-10 stitches per inch.

Context

This piecing and appliquéing was done by approximately 45 members of the Waterford Guild, while 13 members did the quilting. The quilt was designed by Trudy Springer, for whom the quilt was donated for in her memory, and was inspired by the pavilion floor tiles of the Taj Mahal in India. The flowers come from her sketches in flower gardens, marble reliefs from the Taj Mahal, and photos of nature. The quilting was so uniform among the 13 quilters that a judge said the quality "looked like the work of one." This quilt has won first prize in Viewer's Choice and Second in the Group Quilts category at the Belle Grove Century and Quiltmaking show of 1992. Margie Hockman finished the last two/thirds of the quilting, and contributed a few appliquéd blocks.
