This Rain Fence Crazy Quilt is made with wool at a size of 77" x 88 1/2". It consists of 110 rail fence blocks measuring 7 1/2" square. Colors used are red, brown, burgundy, peach, black, and purple. The quilt is machine pieced and tied with red embroidery floss. Decorative treatment is achieved in the embellishments used. They include embroidery in a variety of stitches covering the seams, as well as the date, 1934, and the name, Alvin, the recipient of the quilt, and the creative use of woven twill tape. The tape has been braided, gathered, and ruched in order to render simply pieced blocks as rather fancy.
The backing is a blue plain flannel blanket and is turned to the front to form the binding.Context
Myrta Richey Kennedy made this quilt in 1934 in Harrisonburg, Virginia. This quilt was made for the quilter's son, who then donated it to the Senior Center for a fundraiser. The donor then won it and donated it to the museum.Collection
