Description

Unfinished quilt top. Made of silk.

Context

This quilt top was predominately made by Mollie Zerkel, yet she received help from several of her friends. Donated with this quilt was a list of names of who assisted in making pieces, as well as a box that contained the metal template used in the English paper piecing construction of the top. These paper hexagons would have been removed once the quilt was completed. A note that came with the quilt also indicated that the blue fabric in the quilt was taken from an American Flag to make a Confederate flag. This is interesting because Mollie's father was one of three men from New Market who fought for the Union during the Civil War. After the war, Mollie and her new husband moved to Luray where she opened a museum to showcase some prize Virginian artifacts.
