Description

This quilt is has a papercut botanical design in center in red fabric. There are leaves that border all around in the traditional Hawaiian style. A heart quilted on white ground and piping surrounds the edges. Various quilting designs throughout quilt.

Context

The maker, Nell Townley, has won many awards and sold many quilts since starting to compete in 1978. Some of her quilts are now in the White House collection. This pattern was originally designed by a prominent Hawaiian quiltmaker and historian, Elizabeth A. Akana. Nell Townley used this design in this quilt, the 57th quilt she is credited making. It won several awards, including Mountain Mist Best in Show and 1st place Best in show at the West Virginia State Fair in 2000.
