Description

Appliqued crossed Laurel Leaf "inverted leaf" design, 25 block (5x5) quilt with incomplete factory made fringe from the turn of the century. The blocks vary in size to accommodate the applique design. The entire quilt is hand quilted using single, cotton, white thread. The stitches are uneven at 7 stitches per inch. The quilter used their own interpretation of the design. Some of the basting stitches are still present around the binding. The pattern itself is a rose with 8 leaves design with clamshell on the edges of the border. There is a single appliqued border in red and green fabric of the same design as the leaf blocks. The border itself measures 6 3/4'' wide. The 3/8'' binding is applied top to back by hand with a straight edge and both rounded and square corners. The corners at the top of the quilt are squared, while the corners at the bottom of the quilt are rounded. The fabric used in the binding is different from the fabric used in the design. The backing is composed of 4 strips of muslin pieced vertically. These pieces measure 24'' and one is 14 3/4''. There is a thin cotton batting. All of the fabric would have been new/purchased at the time the quilt was made.

Context

Quilt is attributed to Jane A. Patterson Dever, a resident of Rockingham County. After her husband's death, she and her children went to live with her mother until the eldest daughter, Mary Adeline Dever married in 1870.

Washed and used - moderate use. The red fabric has hole/fabric loss along the right edge of the quilt. There are also some small stains along the top edge.
