35 blocks measuring 11" x 10 1/2" are made in crazy patchwork. At the top is a 3" x 62" strip of crazy patchwork and on the right side the patchwork is in seven blocks measuring 5" x 11".
These two sides, top and right, are bound with a shattered fine fabric in pink color.
The left and bottom sides have a 3" scalloped velvet border with no backing and is buttonhole stitched around the scalloped edges. The color is pink.
Within the blocks the following inscriptions were found: "B.A.H. - PC - B - L.F.R. - 100 ("years" in pencil) - Hayes - H - L - MM - F.E.R. - 100. - BE - R - Ella - MVR - LER - R - DZR - 1886"
Also found were flowers, fans, insects, an elephant, a rat, strawberries, birds, an owl foliage, and a spider and web done in embroidery.
Feather stitching done in various colors ad floss size surrounds each patch within each block.
Back is a salmon color fabric. Some of the ties and embroidery work came through to the back.Context
Lucinda Robinson-Rice quilted this in 1886. She was from Endless Caverns area in Virginia, but moved with her family on covered wagon to settle in Illinois at age five. She would visit relatives in Virginia where she met her husband Dr. Francis Eugene Rice. She then moved to New Market, Virginia.
This quilt was often pulled out by Lucinda's great-grandchildren on rainy days and they would look at the embroidered animals and other figures on the quilt.Collection
