Sherbet Star QuiltEntry/Object ID
2024.014.001Description
This sherbet-colored Lone Star was pieced in the 1930s, yet its side setting pieces were never added. The diamonds were inconsistently pieced, the fabrics were thin, and the edges were fraying. To stabilize the star and create a smooth edge, Mary Kerr stitched the star to a white cotton sheet with right sides together and then turned it through the backing. It was then stitched to a pieced backing that allowed the colors to pop. The binding was pieced from leftover scraps of the backing fabric.
1/4'' applied binding with mitered corners. The binding is multi-colored with pieces of pastel cotton from the background fabric. The entire back is 1 piece of fabric; a solid pastel blue. The batting is thick cotton
Quilted by machine using a longarm. Single, white Glide Pearl thread used in the quilting. Designs are Anne Bright's "Gilded" and Page Johnson's "Seasoned." The star itself is quilted as borders, rather than diamonds using Anne Bright's "FG Feather" design alternated with straight lines.
