Eight to eight and half inch blocks are embroidered in satin stitch of the state flowers which also includes the state names. Fabrics are feedsacks with those in dusty pick being hand dyed with dye mixed at home to obtain the desired shade.Context
This quilt was pieced by Lucy Ann Stringfellow (Aunt T.) when she was 80 years old and quilted by her niece Lucy Catherine Bowie. After her aunt Lucy Stringfellow died on Easter Sunday 1956, Lucy Bowie finished the remaining blocks, quilted it, and entered in the 1956 State Fair where it won Best Needlework of Show. Alaska and Hawaii are missing from the quilt because they had yet to become states.Collection
