Twenty four blocks measuring 11.5" square are made in crazy patchwork on a foundation back. The fabrics used were satin, corduroy, brocade, and other fine fabrics. Within the blocks were stitched words including: "Fair view. - AMS - AC - SCC - B - Mother"
Also found were flowers, fans, crosses, shoes, purses, hats, owls, foliage, and a lady's face.
A variety of stitches done in various colors and floss size surrounds each patch within each block.
A variety of plain-dyes and print fabrics were used for the back foundations.Context
Lucinda Robinson-Rice quilted this circa. 1890. She was from the Endless Caverns area in Virginia, but moved with her family on covered wagon to settle in Illinois at age five. She would visit relatives in Virginia where she met her husband Dr. Francis Eugene Rice. She then moved to New Market, Virginia.
This quilt was often pulled out by Lucinda's great-grandchildren on rainy days and they would look at the embroidered animals and other figures on the quilt.Collection
