This hand-quilted quilt is comprised of 32 pieced blocks made from a red and green print with white background. These blocks are set with plain like-sized blocks. The white has now mellowed to an off-white. The border is 4'' wide and designed in a zig-zag using the green and white plaindye fabrics.
Batting is cotton.
Quilting design in pieced blocks is straight lines. Alternating in the "like" blocks are a flora motif with a grape cluster and a two leaf vine design. Stitching is fine needlework.Context
Very little background is known about this quilt. However, the zig-zag border pattern of this quilt was a common design in the Shenandoah Valley during the mid-1800s. The quiltmaker is unknown, but it is clear they took pride in creating this beautiful green and red quilt.Collection

Red, GreenColor Notes
The Turkey red fabric originally contained a printed black-brown design that is now disintegrating. The mordant used to bind the black-brown dye to the fabric has caused this. The Green is an overdyed green; the yellow that was used in the two-step process dyeing pattern is now becoming more prominent and is slightly changing the shade of green.Condition
Overall Condition
GoodNotes
Design on red fabric has deteriorated on most fabrics, giving it a "holey" appearance. Minimum fading, browning overall (mostly on edges), no holes, very little remaining batting.Overall Condition
