Description

This pieced quilt in colors of blue, red, brown, and pink on an off white background consists of 36 blocks each measuring 12" square. Each block is made up of four eight-pointed stars and each bears a signature, some including dates from 1849-1851. The center block bears written documentation about the quilt and says: "To the reverend S.D. Campbell/The Ladies of High Bridge/and hope he will accept this as a token of their regard. Farewell/ Be of good comfort and the God of Love and peace shall be with you. February 7, 1851/ Rockbridge Co., Virginia" The blocks are separated by a brown floral print sashing and border measuring 2.75". The batting is a thick wool, and the backing is a blue and coral print cotton which creates a self binding when brought from back to front. The hand quilting is simply done in straight lines at 5 stitches per inch.

Context

The ladies made this to be going away gift for the pastor at their church, Reverend Campbell. Reverend Campbell continued to preach at churches in Georgia and Florida. Members of the Walkup, Buchanan, and Houston families contributed to this quilt.
