Description

Pieced and appliquéd quilt worked in colors of red, green, gold, cheddar, and maroon on a cream background. It is a variation of the New York Beauty. The blocks are arranged into a grid of 8 x 8. It contains 64 quarter circle fan blocks separated by appliqué flowers and sashing with curved corner posts. The floral border measures 8.75 inches wide. White binding was appliquéd separately from back to front with square corners. Hand quilted at 9 stitches per inch using white cotton thread. The quilting in the blocks simply outlines the top design, there is a double line "V" motif in the sashing, and a mix of diagonal lines and outline quilting in the border. The backing is composed of 4 strips. The batting is a medium cotton.

Context

The quilt is attributed to Elizabeth Ann Bushong of New Market, Virginia. It was a sister quilt at the Virginia Museum of the Civil War in New Market, Virginia. Both quilts contain the same motifs and paisley fabrics.
