Twenty five reproduced Baltimore Album blocks with one block showing Belle Grove Plantation in Middletown, Virginia are in applique. The blocks are 14 1/2''. Written in ink in each block are Hite family names including 3 generations (including the mother and sister of James Madison). Belle Grove home was built by Major Isaac Hite. Other designs within the applique blocks include a book with an eagle, musical block, wreaths, baskets of flowers, and quatrefoil designs.
The border is a single cream applique vine of flowers. The border is about 12 - 12 1/2'' wide. A legend also appears in the border and those who worked on the quilt have their names written in the border.
There is an applied binding with mitered corners. The binding is about 1/4'' wide and cream. The backing is the same solid, cream cotton and in 1 whole piece.
Quilting covers the entire quilt. There are 1/2'' diagonal lines on the background with cross-hatching in the blocks with circular designs. The fine quilting stitches are completed with single, white, cotton thread. The stiches are very even with 12 stiches per inch. All the work on the quilt was done by hand. Cotton embroidery thread was used in the grape and verry blocks.
Quilt is made with new/purchased fabric.Context
