Hand-pieced and hand-quilted at 5 stitches per inch. The stitches are uneven. The quilting is all over in diagonal lines. Used centennial colors and multiple prints (made to highlight her fabrics, not necessarily her quilting skills). The backside of the quilt contains a label with pink cross-stitching: "Made for Harry / By his grandma E.S.E./ 1873"
The blocks are arranged into a grid of 7 x 7, each measuring 9.75'' square.
The blocks are set with sashing. Single, pieced border along the top and bottom of the quilt measures about 5 inches. The binding is back to front with straight edges and squared corners applied by hand.
There is a medium, cotton batting and finished with a paisley cotton backing. The backing is composed of 4 pieces, which had been hand pieced.Context
Elizabeth "Betsy" Settle Edmonds was married to a man named Lewis Edmonds. The two had 6 children together, including Amanda Virginia Edmonds.
According to Amanda's journals (edited and published by Nancy Chappelear Baird), Amanda, also known as "Tee", was a descendant of the Edmonds and Settle families, both of which owned several acres in the Belle Grove area. Mt. Bleak and Belle Grove were owned by Isaac Settle, Betsy's father. Upon her marriage to Lewis, they received Belle Grove as part of her dowry.
Amanda Edmonds (January 13, 1839 - July 13, 1921) was married to John A. Chappelear. The two had five children together, including Harry, for whom this quilt was made. Amanda died at age 82 of uterine cancer.Collection
