This quilt measures at 78 1/2" x 93" and was made circa 1920. It uses a polished cotton ground.Context
The maker made the quilt out of ladies' house dresses and suspenders from the uniform of a railroad conductor. Her husband, Stilwart Shadrach Estep, was a conductor in Abingdon, Virginia. One of their children caused trouble for the family when they were living in Abingdon. As such, the family moved to North Carolina and changed their last name from Estep to Eastep. Additionally, the Estep family has a connection to the famous McCoy family, those who were feuding with the Hatfield family in Kentucky.Collection
