Appliquéd Tree of Life in center with 3 red 8 lobed flowers surrounded by 7 green print leaves, 2 branches on right, 3 on left with 5 lobed flowers and teardrop shaped leaves. Buds and stems on each branch are embroidered with wool and cotton threads. Brown print vine with green appliqué leaves surround the center panel. Quilting includes flowers, leaves, 2 feather wreaths in the top right and left, diagonal parallel lines, as well as hanging diamonds and clamshells.Context
The quilt was made by Sarah Jane Simpson Higgs before the birth of her first son John, born in 1847. Sarah had 2 other children Mary and James. James passed the quilt to his Granddaughter, Alice Higgs Shriver. Alice Shriver is great Aunt of the donor.Collection

Binding show some wear. Small hole 2/3 down on the right. Tear in mid far right has been professionally mended by Julia Brennan July, 2004
