This quilt is 75 1/2" x 92" using a variation of the Goose tracks pattern with a cross in the center. A signature, "Ella Tavenner" appears on one of the blocks. 30 blocks of various prints of the 1820's/40's are appliquéd with off white fabric forming a pattern - a nine patch of goose tracks with the center being a cross. These blocks are diagonally stripped with green prints then set with like blocks of red and black print, which is now breaking apart. There is a border strip of another green print. The backing is a brown and white print and the binding is same as the little blocks. Various designs emerge in the quilting even though straight lines were used as quilting lines.Context
This quilt was made circa 1870 by Lydia Ellen (Ella) Tavenner Peugh from Hamilton, Virginia. It was then given to Edna Tribby Preston to quilt. Mysteriously, no one came to get the quilt back from Edna Preston, so it remained in the Preston family. In 2018, the quilt was donated by the wife of Edna Preston's son to the Virginia Quilt Museum.Collection
