Feathered Star with Compass CenterEntry/Object ID
2008.001.002Description
The center star is a mariner’s compass with the four directions designated by the gold patches. The outer star is the traditional feathered star pattern based on the Sawtooth Star. Each star is placed side-by-side causing a secondary design of a square and diagonal square that are beautifully hand quilted in a feather design.
The border on one side comprises of half a mariner’s compass nestled between two feathered squares placed diagonally, giving the appearance of either a sunrise or sunset over the mountains. A zig-zag pieced border surrounds the quilt on four sides.Context
The history and the aesthetic of this quilt strongly suggest Shenandoah Valley origins.Collection
