Description

30 basket quilt blocks featuring made out of solid cheddar fabric and a red print. The baskets are centered in a white square on-point and a full square of red prints. Each block is surrounded by a poison green print and the red print at the square intersections. The entire quilt is finished with a double border in the red and green print. The backing is a white muslin. The binding is back to front. The entire quilt is hand quilted using single, white, cotton thread at 6-7 stitches per inch. The borders and blocks contain diagonal lines of three. The quilting in the sashing is an undulating vine with leaves, while the square intersections feature a circle with crosshatching. A white square with quilting is placed at each corner of the quilt with a circular flower or wreath design.

Context

It was made by the donor's great-great-grandmother and was passed down through the family. Ruth Grandle Phillips (donor's mother) gave her this quilt that her grandfather, Mr. Harvey Grandle gave her on July 17, 1926. It was made by Mr. Harvey Grandle's mother. Verdie Phillips Huffman's mother gave it to her because her great-grandfather's birthday was the same day (October 9). He was 75 years old in 1928 when she was born. Donation was made in honor of Ruth Grandle Phillips
