Twenty 15.5'' blocks are appliqued with a design consisting of four stems in indigo blue print and six indigo leaves on each stem. At the tip are three pink (now salmon pink) leaves with the blue stem showing between the leaves which draws one's eyes to these areas. The background fabric is now an off-white color. The backing is off-white and rolled to the front and stitched down as the edging with squared corners. Backing consists of 2.5 vertical panels.
One border measures 9'' and the remaining three measure 9.5'' wide. There is a thin, cotton batting.
Hand quilting is outline of applique with echo quilting within applique as well as on background. On some of the blocks near the border are meandering feather plums with background in quarter-inch-spaced straight lines. Quilting is done at 8-9 stitches per inch.
Pattern is #21.28 in Barbara Brackman's Encyclopedia of Applique.Context
According to family history, Julie Anne Frederick (b. 1815) of Frederick County, Maryland, made this quilt for her marriage to Isaac Hamilton Faulkner in November 1837. The bride's family was of German descent and observed the custom of the dowery, by which the bride provided the linens for the bedding of her new home and the groom provided the furniture. Within the Faulkner family, the quilt is known as the Tulip Quilt.Collection
