This pieced quilt is 86" x 82" and made with cotton fabrics. It has a Star of Bethlehem pattern. A large eight-pointed star was pieced of yellow, green, and rust prints. In each corner is a rust and green appliqué sun burst pattern and in the triangles area, there are appliquéd yellow and rust eight-pointed stars.
The border measures 3 1/2" and is a border print.
The backing was brought to the front as the edging in a finely tuned technique. On the back are, in ink, the initials "LG" or "LS" with a border around the initials. Quilting has a variety of designs; double-line clam shells in unbleached area, feather wreath around sunburst, chevron on sunburst and small stars, straight lines in large star, and diagonal lines in border.Context
This quilt was made in Alexandria, Virginia around 1860. There is a large difference between the ages of the fabric in the center and those used for the border: a sign that the quilt was made first, then edited or added to later. Louise Dinwiddie is believed to have been the one who edited the quilt later in its life. Possibly her mother or her fathers second wife was the original quilt maker. The pattern is very similar to the Lone Star pattern, which required a lot of skill to make.Collection
