Description

11 Nautical blocks are set in rows with alternate white squares, and blue and white sashing. Each of the 12 inch blocks feature some of the recipient's favorite birds, shells, and wildlife from her time in Assateague and Chincoteague. These blocks were hand painted and hand embellished with embroidery details. The blocks are surrounded by a 8.25 inch border on three sides that depict favorite buildings and architectural landmarks from the area. These borders were painted by Canby Robertson. Backing is a cream cotton. Finished with a 0.5 inch blue binding. Hand painted and hand embroidered blocks, machine pieced, and machine quilted. It was long arm quilted by Pat Massamini. The blocks are minimally quilted to outline the images. There are swirls in the sashing and botanical motifs in cornerstones and top border. The alternate white blocks are quilted with nautical motifs.

Context

This quilt was created for Catherine Brodersen in 2007 when members of her embroidery group, painter's guild, and friends joined forces to create a piece that celebrated her love of Chincoteague.
