Context

This beautiful quilt was created in 1997 by internationally known quilter, Anne Oliver from Alexandria, VA. It was created for a contest and Anne donated it to Quilters Unlimited of Northern Virginia as a raffle prize for their 2002 annual show. The donor won it and donated it the museum years later. Anne grew up in a very impoverished family, and became a seamstress when she was in high school yet had no fondness of quilts. However, when she saw one in a show, all she could think is “I could do better than that.” She then created more and more quilts starting in the 70s, constantly trying to make a better one than the last. Her advice to all quilters was “finish at all costs….finish simply because each time you finish a quilt it will give you more experience….even that first quilt is an inspiration for somebody and it is also the greatest self-esteem builder there is.”
