2017.007.003Description
This quilt is composed of two different blocks, the LeMoyne Star alternating with the Tumbling Blocks pattern. There are a total of 33 full stars and 55 tumbling blocks. A single 4.5 inch green border sits along the top and bottom edges of the quilt. A 0.5 inch green binding is brought from the back to the front (by hand) with squared corners.
The quilt is hand-quilted with black thread at 9 stitches per inch. Each diamond is outlined with black quilting and an double undulating design is quilted into the border.
The backing is made up of three horizontal strips of green cotton fabric. There is some slight discoloration of the fabric on the back. The batting is a medium cotton.Context
Made by Fannie Ruth Martin Heatwole. It is believed that the silks used in this piece were from Fannie's husband's work; Elmer Heatwole worked as a machinery foreman at a silk mill, likely the Stehli Silk Corporation that opened in Waynesboro, VA in 1925.Collection
